This year the Castles Challenge Middle Distance Race will be held entirely at Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland. In previous years Alnwick Castle has hosted T2, the run section and the finish.
The stunning setting of Alnwick Castle was a firm favourite with us all, but the new multi lap run course at Bamburgh Castle is outstanding and you’re guaranteed lots of support as the new bike & run routes are very spectator friendly. Anyone who’s competed in this race before and are sad not to be seeing Alnwick Castle, fear not you can enter the Alnwick Trail Runner on 23rd June!
Following competitor feedback, the race entry fees have been reduced this year, but does not include a race t-shirt. When entering online, there is the option to purchase a t-shirt for £9. We guarantee this will be a premium t-shirt and not of inferior quality!
THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL TRIATHLON COURSE – GUARANTEED!
RELAY TEAMS
This is a great event for relay teams! A relay team may consist of either 2 or 3 members. Due to the additional information that we require for relay teams, we ask that registration be made by submitting a completed entry form. We appreciate that this is a little more time consuming than processing an entry online, but you could return the completed form via email. The entry form can be downloaded HERE.

SWIM COURSE
1900 metres. The swim course commences with a beach start before entering the water, then 2 laps of a 950m course. After the first lap, competitors are required to exit the water, run around the beach marker before entering back into the sea to commence lap 2 (an ‘Australian Exit’).
There will be a water safety team consisting of kayaks and rescue boats and we are fortunate enough to also have an RNLI inshore lifeboat attend.
The run up the beach to Transition will be approximately 300 metres based on the tide on the day of the event.
Please note: Clicking on the ‘Earth’ tab in the maps below is a great way of viewing the course, however, you must have the necessary plugin installed on your PC to view this feature.

The course runs in a clockwise direction.

21km. The run course consists of 3 laps of a stunning coastal route that heads along the cliffs to Budle Bay overlooking the beautiful sandy beaches before returning to pass through the grounds of Bamburgh Castle with glorious views to Holy Island and beyond.
Upon commencing the run section, competitors will begin with a pass through the grounds of Bamburgh Castle, then will head out to start the first of 3 laps with each lap completed after passing through the castle. The total run distance is 21km (13.1 miles).
On each lap you’ll twice pass the Race HQ, so there’ll be plenty of support to help cheer you along!
